This is not a love story.
At least, not in the way you’re thinking. Maddie and Annie have been best friends for a decade. Was it merely their shared love of Taco Bell, quoting Baby Mama, and their relatively mediocre soccer skills that brought them together? Probably not.
In high school they had a special bond. Despite the fact that they both loved having sleepovers (they were gay), getting pretty drunk (repressing the fact that they were gay), and running away from their prom dates (gay, gay, gay, gay), neither one of them could put their finger on what made their friendship different. That is until the year 2014, when Annie come out to Maddie, and Maddie came out to Annie, on the same night.
After they both took some time to sort through their sexuality, and their relationships, they started this podcast to talk about what it means to be two queer women living in a post DOMA world. They talk about being artists, being alone, being adults, their big breakups, and their many, many, many little ones.
So they’re not in love. But they couldn’t love each other more. This is best friendship at its finest. And while I may be biased, the two of them have changed and evolved in such impressive ways that this show, though unscripted, offers some of the greatest narrative content your ears could want.
Maddie
is a musician based in Los Angeles. She’s trying to crack the music industry while managing a tight budget and working for her parents. She used to live with her producer girlfriend until she was brutally dumped (see episode 4.2 “The Big One”) one day. Now she lives with her son, a German Shepherd named Zeus. She is the hardest worker there is and the best friend a girl could ever ask for. Better even.
Maddie’s other son is named…
Annie,
who is a writer typically living in New York. Unlike Maddie, there was a time when Annie was not brave enough to pursue art, so this show takes her on a journey from being a masters student at Duke, graduating, then finally accepting her fate. Now Annie is finishing her book. Fred is a collection of personal essays that are even more revealing than this podcast.
When the country suddenly suffered from Coronavirus and the absolute failure of the T***p Administration to lessen its impact, this show was on our season hiatus. At the start of season 5, we find Annie now living in Los Angeles, close to her best pal, Maddie, who has been trying to convince Annie to move to LA for the entirety of this show.
And now you’re all caught up. See you next Tuesday for the latest episode.
